Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86).

C:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin\openssl.exe req -new -nodes -newkey rsa:2048 -out C:\trailers.pem -keyout C:\trailers.key -x509 -days 7300 -subj “/C=US/CN=trailers.apple.com” -config C:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin\openssl.cfg

C:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin\openssl.exe x509 -in C:\trailers.pem -outform der -out C:\trailers.cer

type C:\trailers.key >> C:\trailers.pem

openssl req -new -nodes -newkey rsa:2048 -out ~/Desktop/trailers.pem -keyout ~/Desktop/trailers.key -x509 -days 7300 -subj “/C=US/CN=trailers.apple.com”

openssl x509 -in ~/Desktop/trailers.pem -outform der -out ~/Desktop/trailers.cer && cat ~/Desktop/trailers.key >> ~/Desktop/trailers.pem

sudo “/Applications/PlexConnect-master/PlexConnect.py”

sudo ./PlexConnect.py

Plex Pass?

Plex Pass.

5. Non-Mobile Plex Apps

Plex.

What Can I Do About It?

Turn Off Video Preview Thumbnails Generation

Since video preview thumbnails are one of the most common reasons for large directories, disabling their generation can greatly reduce further growth of the directory.

Note that disabling the settings will not affect existing video preview thumbnails; only future items will be affected. (However, see below regarding existing items.)

Tip!: You can choose on a per-library basis whether video preview thumbnails are created for that library. So, if you want them for movie content but not TV episodes, you can do that.

Related Page:

Delete Existing Video Preview Thumbnails

If you have existing video preview thumbnails that you no longer want, you can remove those. To do so:

  1. Edit the library for which you want to remove thumbnails (e.g. your Movies or TV library)
  2. Select the Advanced tab on the left
  3. Use the Delete Preview Thumbnails button
  4. Confirm that you want to delete them

After you confirm deletion, your Plex Media Server will go through your library content and remove the video preview thumbnails. Depending on your library size, this may take a while to complete.

Tip!: If you wish to remove the video preview thumbnails for more than one library, simply edit each one and choose to delete.

Note: You’ll want to make sure that you also turn off video preview thumbnail creation or else they’ll simply get re-generated.

Relocate your Plex Media Server Data Directory

If the underlying issue is that you’re running out of space on a small boot drive, for instance, then the easiest solution is often simply to relocate the Plex Media Server data directory.

Tip!: When relocating the data directory, you should make sure you do so to an internal drive on your computer (hard drive or SSD). Moving to a network location or an external (e.g. USB) drive can result in poor, unexpected, or even completely broken behavior.

For Windows installations, you can change the LocalAppDataPath advanced, hidden server setting. Refer to information about that setting for details.

macOS

The easiest way to re-locate the data directory on macOS is typically to use a standard symbolic link (symlink) to place the directory in another location and then point to it from the original location. It’s important to note that it needs to be an actual symlink and not an alias or shortcut.

Related Page: Symbolic Link (Wikipedia)

You can use a symbolic link on Linux similar to macOS (above), though the user and permissions situation on Linux often makes that more complicated. You can find more detailed information about how to re-locate the data directory in the forums.

Relocate your Sync Data Directory

If you need to move the directory used to store your processed sync files before they’re synced, you can use a standard symbolic link (symlink) to relocate the directory. It’s important to note that it needs to be an actual symlink and not an alias or shortcut.

The default location for the Sync data directory varies based on your OS:

General Troubleshooting

Here are some general troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Ensure you have the current version of Plex Media Server installed
  • Ensure that Plex Media Server is actually actively running
  • Verify that your Server is listed on your page
  • Disable any VPN on your computer or router
  • Disable any proxies being used on your computer or router
  • Make sure you aren’t requiring secure connections on the server while using an app that doesn’t support them (see below)

Once you’ve checked those:

  1. Sign out of your Plex account in both the app and Plex Media Server
  2. in the Server
  3. Then sign into your account in the Plex app

Depending on whether your app is local or remote to the Server, there are also other things to check. If you continue to have an issue, then posting details in our support forums will be the best resource for you. See the Related Page information for additional information you can gather.

App and Server Are on the Same Network

When both your Plex app and Plex Media Server are on the same local network:

Make sure both the Server and app are on the same subnet of the network

Tip!: Make sure the subnet mask (netmask) is set correctly, so that the devices are actually treated as being on the same subnet.

App Is Remote from the Server

If your app is not on the same network as your Plex Media Server:

Ensure that Remote Access has been successfully enabled for the Server

Can’t Access Server Settings

In some cases, you may find that the Server entry doesn’t appear for you under Settings in the web app and thus you can’t try to sign in to the Server. This often occurs when you’re not yet signed in on the Server and you’re using the hosted Plex Web App.

  1. Load the “” on your Server computer using or , for instance
  2.  to the Plex Web App
  3. Access the Server settings and sign in to the Server

Once you’ve done that, your Plex Media Server should appear when using the hosted Plex Web App, too.

Using a Third-Party App That Cannot Sign In

Starting with version 1.1.0 of Plex Media Server, security improvements were made to help protect users. Basically, if you are signed in to Plex Media Server, then apps accessing the server must also be signed in.

In rare cases, you may have an old, deprecated app that does not support signing in such as LG’s “Media Link” or “Smart Share” apps. To allow such apps to access your Plex Media Server, you will need to make a specific exception for them.

  1. Find out the local IP address of the device on which the app is running. You will typically be able to find this in the device’s system settings.
  2. In your Plex Web App, go to Settings > Server > Network.
  3. Enter the IP address from step one into the List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth setting and save.

Finding the Collections Within a Library

Collections can be discovered or viewed in four main ways:

  1. Filter by the collection
  2. Item details/preplay screen
  3. Viewing the library “By Collection”
  4. Add as a recommendation row to your library or home screen
  5. Inline and collapsed with other items when browsing a library

Filter by Collection

Filtering by collection leaves out all other items in your media list except the items in the collection. Note this is different from the “details” screen described later.

Item Details/Preplay Screen

When viewing the details/preplay screen for a specific item that belongs to a collection, the entire collection may be shown as “related” information on the screen. This is only applicable for movie and TV libraries.

Viewing the Library by Collections

Only show collections that exist in the library. Opening a collection goes to the “collection details page” screen (see below).

Add as a Recommendation Row

As of Plex Media Server 1.22.3 a server owner can set a collection to appear as a row on the Home or library Recommended screens.

Related Page:

Collapsed inline with other items in library

This is a library display option described in more detail below. They will only appear when the library is sorted by Title/Name. For TV libraries, it applies only to viewing the library by shows (and not episodes or seasons). Opening a collection goes to the “collection details page” screen (see below).

Opening the Plex Web App on a Device Other than the Server Itself

On the Same Local Network

To open Plex Web App from a different device than the server computer while still on the same network:

  1. Open a browser window
  2. Type into the address bar (e.g “http://192.168.1.5:32400/web”)
  3. The browser will connect to the server and load Plex Web App

On a Different Network

If you’re on a different network than the server computer (or the entire “local network” is not in the private network IP ranges), you’ll first need to set up a SSH tunnel so that you can access things as if they were local.

Tip!: This is only necessary for the initial setup. Once you’ve gone through the setup, you can access as normal.

macOS or Linux

  1. Open a Terminal window or your command prompt
  2. Enter the following command (substituting the IP address of your server as appropriate):
  3. Open a browser window
  4. Type into the address bar
  5. The browser will connect to the server as if it were local and load Plex Web App

Windows

If you’re using Windows on your local system and your server is on Linux or macOS, you’ll need to use an application such as Putty or Windows 10’s built-in SSH client that can create the SSH tunnel for you. You can use instructions like these for setting up the Putty/SSH connection. If following that, you would use this information:

  • Gateway: ip.address.of.server
  • Source Port: 8888
  • Destination: localhost:32400

Once you have the SSH tunnel set up:

  1. Open a browser window
  2. Type into the address bar
  3. The browser will connect to the server as if it were local and load Plex Web App

If your server is running Windows, then you could do a standard Remote Desktop session or similar.

The “Free to Use” Parts: The Server and Apps

There are some details to get into, but the summary of “free” is simple:

  • The video/music/photo media you own is yours. Of course, we don’t charge you in any way for that.
  • The Plex Media Server is free to use and includes the Plex Web App.
  • Our ‘Movies & TV’ streaming service is free to all users and ad-supported.
  • Free TV streaming is available from our ad-supported Live TV on Plex service
  • Connect a compatible tuner and antenna to your server to let you watch over-the-air broadcasts available at your location live. (Recording of broadcasts requires a Plex Pass subscription.)
  • “Podcasts” and “Web Shows” support are free for all users.
  • All of our non-mobile, public apps are free. These include Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Plex Media Player, Roku, Smart TVs, Windows & macOS computers and game consoles (PlayStation and Xbox).
  • 30-second previews of songs from TIDAL are available to anyone in the app.
  • Our mobile apps (Android and iOS) can be used for free, but have limitations.

Hosted Plex Web App

You can access the Plex Web App from wherever you are by making use of the version hosted on the plex.tv website. To use it:

  • Open a browser window
  • Visit https://app.plex.tv/desktop

or:

  • Sign in to your account on the plex.tv website
  • Click the large orange Launch button at the top right:

When you do so, the web application will be loaded from the plex.tv website. It runs in your local browser and accesses content from the local browser.

Tip!: When using the hosted Plex Web App, your connection does not go “through” the plex.tv website. Communication happens between the browser and Plex Media Server directly.

In order to be able to access and manage your content when away from home, you’ll need to ensure that you’ve successfully enabled Remote Access for your server.

Movies

Movies.

Desktop Computer

Running Plex Media Server on a desktop computer is a very popular option. This allows you to choose your operating system and you have flexibility in your computer components.

Operating System

You can run Plex Media Server on a desktop computer running a number of operating systems.

Tip!: You’ll generally want to ensure that you’ve installed all “critical” type updates or service packs for your current operating system.

Windows

When running on Windows, the following operating system versions are supported:

  • Windows 7 SP1 / Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
  • Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012
  • Windows 8.1 (with Update) / Windows Server 2012 R2 (with Update)
  • Windows 10

Linux

We have official Plex Media Server releases available for the following Linux Distributions:

  • CentOS 7 or newer
  • Debian 8 or newer
  • Fedora 27 or newer
  • SUSE 15 or newer
  • Ubuntu 16.04 or newer

FreeBSD

Plex Media Server releases are available for FreeBSD 11.2 or newer.

Note: If running in a FreeBSD “jail”, you’ll want to make sure that VNET is enabled. (For instance, FreeNAS has instructions.)

CPU

CPU requirements can vary dramatically, depending on how exactly you want to use Plex, which particular Plex apps you’ll be using, properties of your media, how many people will be using Plex at the same time, and more.

As a minimum, we recommend:

Intel Core i3 (or equivalent) or faster

Note: While Plex Media Server can install and run on a computer with a slower processor, you might not have a very good experience, depending on your usage.

Generally, any modern computer should meet that minimum. However, if you will have multiple people accessing content simultaneously and you’ll sometimes require transcoding of content during playback, then you may well need something faster than the minimum.

If your computer’s CPU is not powerful enough to keep up with transcoding your media, you will notice pausing or buffering as the app waits for the server to catch up. We have additional information to help you figure out what kind of processor you might need for your own particular usage.

Related Page: Related Page:

In general, Plex Media Server doesn’t require large amounts of RAM. 2GB of RAM is typically more than sufficient and some installs (particularly Linux-based installs) can often happily run with even less. Of course, more RAM won’t hurt you and will certainly be helpful if you’re also doing other things on the computer.

VPN on the Plex Media Server Computer

The platforms on which some Plex apps run don’t allow us to actively scan the network to try and find available Plex Media Servers. Other platforms don’t allow direct communication to any private IP (e.g. any IP on your local network). Among others, the PlayStation, Smart TVs, and Xbox apps are affected by these restrictions.

That means we have to get connection information in another way, which is provided when both the Plex Media Server and the app sign into your Plex account. This is accomplished because your Plex Media Server will send its private and public IP address to plex.tv, which can then be retrieved and used by the Plex app to find servers.

When using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), the IP information can be incorrect because of the VPN and thus the Plex app doesn’t have the correct/necessary information to be able to find your Plex Media Server and connect.

What You Can Do

Essentially, you want to make sure that your VPN isn’t interfering when your Plex Media Server sends the connection information to plex.tv.

  1. Disable the VPN
  2. Launch Plex Media Server
  3. Ensure that the Server successfully signs in under Settings > Server > General
  4. Enable the VPN

When You Should Do It

You should take the above steps whenever new connection information would be sent to plex.tv, which includes:

  • Launching or restarting the Server
  • Signing in to the Server
  • Whenever your computer experiences a network change (e.g. a laptop switching from wired to wireless connection)

Apple TV.

Plex Media Server:

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers.cer

Local Plex Web App

Your Plex Media Server comes bundled with a local version of the Plex Web App. This allows you to manage your Server and access content even if you don’t have an internet connection available.

You can open Plex Web App in a variety of ways, depending on which platform and computer you’re using.

Preparation

Before You Begin

Before you begin installing Plex Media Server, it’s strongly recommended that you check that your media collection has been named and organized in a way that Plex will understand. If not, you may notice content isn’t recognized, is mis-matched, or not found at all.

You may already be naming and organizing your media files in a way suitable for Plex. Here are the important things:

  • Movies are gathered together in a “Movies” type folder, TV Shows in a “TV Shows” type folder, etc.
  • Movies are named as follows:

  • TV Show episodes are named with the season and episode:

  • TV Show episodes are stored in their own folder as follows:

  • For TV shows, the folder structure can be very important. Make sure you have show folders that contain season folders that contain the episodes

Tip!: It’s important to understand that Plex Media Server does not have its own graphical user interface. When you run the server on your computer, NAS, or other device, you won’t see a window open with a “server UI” or similar. Instead, you use the Plex Web App to manage your server.

Download the Installer

The Plex Media Server can be downloaded for free from the Plex Downloads page. There are many platforms available:

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • Linux
  • Compatible NAS devices

From the Downloads page, choose the platform or device you need, and download the installer.

Get a Plex (Player) App

While you’re on the Downloads page, you may wish to download a player app as well. The server includes the browser-based Plex Web App, but you’ll probably want to download an app for other devices. There are many available:

  • Windows/macOS Desktop PCs: Plex for Windows, Plex for macOS, or Plex Media Player (primarily intended for HTPC usage)
  • Mobile Devices: Android, iOS
  • Connected Devices: Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, Smart TVs, game consoles, and more

3. Completing Plex Media Server Setup

The Setup Wizard

The Setup Wizard should be running. It will lead you through a short series of steps to perform actions like naming your server and setting up your media libraries.

Setting Up Libraries and Adding Media

When the asks you to set up libraries, it means you are organizing your media collections for Plex. As we mentioned earlier in this article, there are five types of libraries you can set up for your media (movies, TV shows, music, photos, and home videos) and Plex uses your file and folder data to match content and then gather awesome metadata for it. For files you have ripped or purchased (without digital rights management)—like movies, TV shows, or music—the metadata, filenames, and folders are usually organized well enough for Plex to enhance correctly, without any issues or need to correct. There are also ways to correct any issues, and they are outlined in the media preparation guide.

We suggest, at this point, that you prepare a test folder for each media type, add libraries, and see how it looks in Plex. Try some movies, TV shows, home videos, music, and photos. You can always go back and update the library, delete it, recreate libraries, or start over with a new library.

This test will give you a sense for the organization and labeling you want. Then, you can decide how you want your libraries grouped and named. For example, you may want to go ahead and add well organized folders to various libraries right away, and then put a bunch of unorganized files and folders into another library—these might be named “Summer Beach Trip 2014 Photos” and “Unorganized 2014 Photos.”

Note: Video content purchased from online stores such as iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon will typically be protected by DRM (digital rights management) and cannot legally be played in other systems such as Plex.
